Alexa Nagel Mrs. Billings Honors English 10-7th Period 18 May 2018 Killer Whales Have Feelings Too? The film Blackfish shows the life of Tilikum. Tilikum is a captive whale who has been known to kill and/or harm people. The film was made to shame SeaWorld, but SeaWorld has a side to the story too. Blackfishes major claim is whales can become hyperactive when held in captivity, however, SeaWorld claims killer whales are great to adapting. In the documentary they use rhetorical appeals to really pull the audience in and make them listen and believe what the documentary has to say. For example, they use logos which appeals to the logical side of thinking. Example: capturing whales is unethical because they use speed boats, bombs, and airplanes. There are eye witness accounts and videos of the event happening. Ethos: SeaWorld sent Orcas to Lo Parque knowing the park could not take proper care of them because the whales ate the lining of the pools. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Osha) even had video evidence of this account. Pathos: The whales are treated poorly because whales are locked in small tanks. Trainers and OSHA experts say two-thirds of their lives they spend locked up in a tank barely big enough for the whales. Although, SeaWorld uses the same tactics Blackfish does, for example, Ethos: The film gives off the idea that SeaWorld did not take safety precautions when acquiring Tilikum. According to “Why ‘Blackfish’ is propaganda, not a Documentary,” “From the date Tilikum arrived at SeaWorld, no one was allowed to swim in the water with Tilikum.” So, SeaWorld did take safety precautions. Pathos: SeaWorld is sad about the loss of Dawn. According to, “Inside SeaWorld,” “... A SeaWorld trainer lost her life in a tragic accident involving one of the parks killer whales.” And finally, logos: killer whales should not swim with trainers. According to, “SeaWorld’s Response to the Movie ‘Blackfish’” “The case allowed OSHA to prevent orcas from swimming with trainers.” Personally I agree with “Blackfish” because of these two reasons: killer whales have feelings because when the whales were being kidnapped they started crying, there was video evidence to prove this true. And Taking in Tilikum was a bad idea because he killed a trainer and there was a first had account to prove this to be true. SeaWorld claims they know how to handle killer whales because their staff has interacted with killer whales, but there are multiple accidents where trainers have been attacked by killer whales and have not handled it like a professional should, for example, kicking and screaming. Therefore, SeaWorld does not know how to treat killer whales and should not display the killer whales.

Frankenstein Mini-Essay Reflection Journal
On previous papers in my honors english ten course, my grades have been a little above average, the average being a C and I received a B on my Animal Farm Rhetorical Analysis essay. One thing I did well on was following SOAPSTONE pretty well and explain the emotional appeals. However, there are a couple things I need to work on, such as, making sure I really following the guidelines and pushing myself to always put the most effort I can in. I feel like time management goes along with that idea of more effort because personally I think I waited too long and felt rushed.
Also, the poster project I received fifteen out of fifteen points. On the mini essay I got a twenty-nine out of thirty-five. I believe on this project I did more things well than bad I put time and effort into my work and I did a better job following directions, however, I did miss a few things on the directions which is why I did not receive full credit on my mini-essay. I feel I could have done a better check list and then I would have realized I was missing items. If I could change something on my essay I would add positives to the outcome of putting all these parts of people together instead, I focused on all the bad things like, ¨Someone could not actually put someone's lips on another persons face. Even if one could do such a thing
the parts would not work together¨ (Nagel, 2). Instead I should have stated that and then said ¨On the other hand, having someone else's lips could be pretty cool because if you could not find the right words to say maybe they could.¨ I did not have someone peer edit this paper simply because I ran out of time. If I had a second chance I definitely would have some peer edit the paper because they could catch mistakes I did not.
In addition, I thought this assignment was something fun and really cool to do. It was at a good time in the year because it gave me a break from doing harder activities. Although, if I could change one thing, I would take a little bit of the guidelines out of the mini essay and instead add in something where students have to predict how their ¨monster¨ will relate to Victor's monster.
